01: To Get What you Want, Forget What you Want
Host, Nina Woodard, and Guest, Grace Judson discuss Grace’s statement “Forget what we want in order to get what we want”. Grace recommends that we can actually change the course of interactions by putting ourselves into listening mode and understanding what is being communicated as a need from the other party in our conversation. They discuss that fact that some may consider speaking in a way that the listener understands and thinks may be considered manipulative and counter that it is really a communication art to be able to position our wants and needs in a way that they are understood and acted on by others.
02: Building Relationships at work in order to Help Others (and Ourselves) Achieve
Nina and Grace discuss the importance of recognizing and understanding the emotional impact of what is going on in our interactions with others, getting away from what we want and considering how to frame and communicate a subject for the other person to hear and understand our point. Grace further explains how the brain works when someone is making a decision and how our understanding of that dynamic can help us approach them where they are, instead of where we are. Our own emotional intelligence plays a part in helping us and others achieve success.
03: How Do I Make This Work?
Nina and Grace agree that understanding more about oneself and how one tends to react in various situations helps in communicating with others. Nina and Grace recommend the various communication profiling tools available on line and explain how learning about one’s own communication style from these tools also helps one understand more about other types of communication styles. Grace shares techniques for overcoming objections and resistance in getting one’s idea heard and understood and provides insight into how our own frame of reference and mindset may drive that reaction unless we understand the messages we are sending.
