Auto-immune diseases such as Crohn’s, Celiac, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus all involve an imbalance of the immune system. A large part of conventional treatment for these diseases involves suppressing the immune system. In auto-immune conditions, a part of the immune system has become confused and overactive. Our immune system begins to attack our tissue, and create a variety of conditions based on what it attacks. However, in auto-immune conditions, only one part of our immune system is overactive and unfortunately medications that are used like prednisone, a steroid and methotrexate, a chemotherapy also used to treat cancer, suppress all parts of our immune system. This leaves patients with auto-immune conditions at risk for infections because of lowered immune response. An Integrative approach would differ in that it works to balance the immune systems pieces, rather than just suppress all of it. One of the best ways to balance the immune system is rooted in the gut. This is why people with better gut function are less likely to get auto-immune conditions. Toxicity also weakens the immune system and makes it more likely to become imbalanced. Lowering toxicity also helps to restore balance. By balancing the immune system, you can reduce auto-immune conditions, but not become immune compromised but rather immune competent! Learn how to move from suppression to balance on our show.
