The show, which ran from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, 2012, had a more crowded floor with new cars, more manufacturers, 10 new-vehicle test drives (including CODA electric and Fiat 500), a fine art show and the world’s only street-legal bumper cars.

02. Detroit auto show: Sears to debut a new tractor
•
Yes, a tractor at the biggest domestic auto show. Sears will debut the Cadillac of garden tractors with its CTX 9500, the first tractor to be featured at the Detroit event.
•
The CTX tractor includes such features as traction control, cruise control, electronic fuel management, electronic cutting height adjustment and quick deck removal.
•
Powered by a 30-hp Briggs & Stratton engine with an 8 mph top speed. On sale in February, starting prices range from about $3,000 to $6,500. Attachments are sold separately.

Evoque is the new, hot chic vehicle of the year.

Sold in 3- and 5-door models, starting prices range from $44,995 coupe to $43,995 five-door, which includes all-wheel drive and a 240-hp, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The test car was $59,670, including $850 freight, as tested.

03. Mr. Fixit Minute: Insurance buyback.

If your favorite car is “totaled” by the insurance company, should you buy it back? Sometimes.
•
Save some money on your collision coverage. If your car is older and likely to be “totaled” for value by the insurance company, there’s no sense in carrying $10,000 in coverage on a car that’s worth $2,000.

01. New car test: 2012 Chevrolet Volt
•
There are many things the Volt is not, but what it is will work well for most drivers. $43,000 as-tested before $7,500 tax credit and possible $1,500 state incentives. Dave was getting 34 miles out of a battery charge but only used six gallons of gas in a week that typically consumes twice or more that amount.
•
HOV legal in CA. The 2012 Volt with the Low Emissions Package will be eligible to apply for a pass to drive in California High Occupancy Vehicle.
•
Who is at fault for the recent fire fiasco – NHTSA or GM? And is this just a bump in the road as all manufacturers launch advanced technology, electrified vehicles?
02. New car test: 2012 VW Beetle Turbo
•
I was never in love with the New Beetle, but VW is pushing hard to reach me and more male drivers with the redesigned and reshaped 2012 model.

03. Mr. Fixit Minute: Tire chains: How? When? What?

Be prepared and find the right size chains before you head to the mountains. Larger tire sizes today make finding the correct chain size more difficult in a last-minute purchase.
04. Car culture: Hankook Tire's Winter Gauge Index survey
• Among 1,001 survey responders, 84 percent said they would either like it or not mind it if a loved one gave them tires for the holidays (35% would love it, 49% would not mind it.)

• Volkswagen of America specialist Darryll Harrison leads a virtual walkaround. Starting prices range from $19,765 (manual) to $29,865 (Turbo automatic).
02. New Beetle: Less cutesy, more performance
•
2 engines: 170-hp, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder with 5-speed manual or six-speed automatic. 200-hp, 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder with six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automated manual (Direct Shift Gearbox).
03. Mr. Fixit Minute: Which is safer, a donut spare or using a spare-tire inflator?
• A space-saving temporary spare tire is safe when used for the duration and speeds recommended by the manufacturer.
04. New car test: Mustang Boss 302 – can it get any better?
• For $43,000 as-tested, there is nothing that can compare with its power (444-hp), sound (quad pipes), short-throw shifter (6-speeds), race-track finesse, short-turning circle, good sightlines and usable trunk.
