But what do you know about the legendary athlete beyond his wrestling career?
Angle was born in Pennsylvania like his wife, though he has a more complicated background with English, German, Irish, and Italian roots. He’s also been through plenty of hardships throughout his life.
His father, a crane operator, died in a construction accident when Angle was only 16 years old. As a result of losing his father at such a young age, Kurt treated his wrestling coach, David Schultz, as a paternal figure.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last long. In January 1996, Schultz was murdered by the sponsor of his team of Olympic perspectives, missing Angle’s life achievement of winning the gold medal.
That wasn’t the last heartbreak in Kurt Angle’s life, though. In 2003, his older sister, Le’Anne, died at the age of 43. 12 years later, his mother died of cancer in 2015.
Kurt Angle’s First Marriage
Before marrying Giovanna, Kurt Angle was married to Karen Smedley. The couple got married on December 19, 1998, but their marriage only lasted 10 years.
Despite having two children together, Karen filed for divorce from Kurt in 2008. Though the reasons for that divorce are unknown, it may have been related to Angle’s arrest in 2007 on a DUI charge.
Kurt Angle’s Second Marriage
Two years after finalizing his divorce from his first wife, Kurt proposed to his now-wife, Giovanna Yannotti. They got engaged in 2010 and tied the knot in 2012. Together, the couple had three children and adopted one, bringing the total of Kurt Angle’s kids to six.
